4 Things To Love About Independence Day

It’s only been 241 years since the Declaration of Independence was signed.  In that time our country has had a lot of ups and downs.  One thing that has not changed is the nostalgic feeling we get while celebrating our country’s independence.  It could be the way your eyes well up during the National Anthem or the feeling of pride when you see a group of soldiers in uniform.  Here in the South, we are very patriotic from the flag flying over our porches to the Heritage Days many of our towns celebrate each year.  Whether you are patriotic throughout the year or not, one day brings us all together as a country.  July 4th will always stand for our Independence.

Here are my favorites things about July 4th.

Who doesn’t love a good picnic? Here in Chattanooga, there are a lot of parks, mountain ledges, and waters edges to have a picnic.  Packing up a basket, a blanket, and some sweet tea is a great way to share the day with your family and enjoy the beautiful outdoors of this great country.

A totable picnic mat is essential for easy picnic set-up.  I like to use one that rolls or folds back up into a carrying case.  I found a great one that even comes with a game board!

Cooking Out

Ever walked outside and smelled the wonderful aroma of barbecue or hamburgers being grilled down the street?  On July 4th, we all seem to take the time to pull the grill out and fire it up for the family.

I love grilled pineapple and these Jerk-grilled hamburgers with avocado & grilled pineapple are amazing!

What a great time to teach your children about patriotism and America.  Make it a whole day of fun by trying some of these:

  • Go on a flag hunt around town and see who can spot the most.
  • Organize a neighborhood bicycle parade and have them decorate their bikes.
  • Take a white t-shirt and let them draw their own flag while explaining what the stars and stripes mean                                                                                                                 Stars and stripes

The grand finale of the day is usually fireworks.  You can set them off in your own backyard or attend the local firework show in your home town.  It’s a spectacular way to end a day full of patriotism, good food, and family fun.  Here’s a list of some of the best shows according to
